Princess

I did alright. Took me awhile to paint this. I think I have anatomy issues. I tried to make this exciting and fun. Thanks for looking

Go Joe!!! I really like the shading on the little creatures. Nice reflective light. Looks nice and clean too. I like the shape of the girl's lips in the sketch more though. Well done. Do more!!

I think you have some cool color chocies, and the shading on the body is pretty good, but the shadows and highlights on her face are so harsh and sharp and contrasty, it almost seems to deform her face shape (like giving her this razor sharp cheekbone) - I ate to say it, but I liked it better in the sketch - she looked prettier. The harsh lighinhg works fine on the creatures, bit they aren't supposed to look pretty. I would make that comment in genreal on your painted protraits; don't go crazy on the dark shadows and the rimlights - it gives faces a dramatic (possibly scary) look that you may not always want, and makes the skin look unnaturally shiny, almost metallic. It's a common mistake I see with people who want to show off what they can do with color, highlights, shadows, etc., and they just do a little too much(thery're trying too hard!)
If you haven't already, try putting a light near a real woman's face in the same position as your picture, and see what the shadows do. THEN experiment with what highlights/shadows make her look prettier, and which make her look ugly (you can make her look dramatic but still pretty) Take out or change any detail that makes her look unappealing, even if it isn't completely real (your sketch is more appealing because it leaves details up to the imagination- more detail is not always better)

After looking some more, I've figured out what's really bugging me about the way her face is lit. She's staring full-on (it seems) into this glowing orb, so her face should be almost flattened out(the way a flash picture flattens out your features?), becuse the light is hitting her straight on. Instead, it looks like her cheekbone is popping out from the rest of her face - that would make more sense if the light was more above her.
